I’ve been using a variety of project tools for a while now. For me, the one thing that has been indispensable is a project management platform that has a bug tracker and version control as part of the package.

One of the first bug trackers that I used and sometime still use is a bug tracking system called Flyspray: The Bug Killer! It’s actually great little system to use; it’s pretty light and uses php and mysql.

I used to use activeCollab when it was free (loosely based on Basecamp) but they stopped supporting the free version after version 0.7 and then started charging for it. It’s a pretty good platform and was then picked up and continued over at ProjectPier.

I have also checked out Project Spaces from my friends over at Forum One which is fairly good but more geared towards the business end of things like BaseCamp.

However, when you start looking for a project management platform that also has bug tracker and source control integrated in to it the picking become a little slim. I have tested a couple but currently the one that I like the most is Assembla.

Assembla actually has pretty much all the basics included in the other project management packages but this one also includes a bug tracker, version control (supporting Trac, Git and Subversion), wiki, and your basic Milestones, Tasks, and Discussions, etc. The only real downside is that if you have large projects you have to pay for them.
